Thanksgiving...

During a week of chaos & shopping for most of the civilized world, it is nice to take a moment & contemplate the things I am thankful for. Things that may often be over-looked, but that bring joy to the soul & remind me that life truly is beautiful.

The first falling snow, pondering at sunrise, watching the tide come in, summers in Maine, Floridian winters, when a man opens my door, holding a child in my arms as she sleeps, the smell of slow-cooked Sunday dinners when you come in from church, sharing the gospel w/ someone & hearing them pray for the first time, Making Sienna Laugh, the reflection of the stars on a lake, freedom to worship when/where/how I wish, laughing for no reason w/an old friend, the look of pure joy when Livie saw me at the airport, and her joy as she played with the balloons I gave her, homemade caramels @ Christmas, playing 'the favorites game' with my little nieces & nephew in the car, singing in the shower, the glow of twilight that lights fire to the sky during the golden hour, the opportunity to forgive & be forgiven, camping in the middle of nowhere & counting shooting stars, getting lost in a good book, BYU devotionals, the opportunity to work, the feel of the wind on my face, giving someone the perfect gift, a desire to become better & progress every day, sending postcards to loved ones from places I travel, a washer & dryer, the ability & choice to see the best in another person, having clean/hot/safe water, planting a garden & keeping the freaking deer out, watching a child's face light-up as they look at Christmas lights, Costco, strong hands & a resilient heart, my friend visiting Utah, those who sacrifice & defend my freedoms, evening walks, my down comforter, the first scoop of peanut butter out of a new jar, ice cubes, outdoor movies on summer evenings, the way my heart pounds before someone holds my hand for the first time, college football (and AMAZING upsets this past week), dryer softening sheets, northern lights & fireflies, fly-fishing on the river w/the brothers while contemplating life, the opposition that helps me to recognize and appreciate all the wonderful things in my life, fresh flowers from my garden, My great-grandmother’s wedding ring that survived the great depression, the crescent moon that smiles down on us & hearing my niece say "moon. moon moon moon moon" then kisses @ bedtime, C.S. Lewis, toilet paper, teaching another to do something i love & seeing them succeed & find joy in doing it, learning new things, having friends to dinner, new pj's for Christmas, socks to keep my feet warm, the ferris wheel, the smell of rain on the trees or freshly cut grass, the feel of sand beneath my feet, a tooth brush, my eyesight, freshly baked-perfect chocolate chip cookies, coming home to a clean house, floating in first tracks in powder, the opportunity to serve others, Winger's spicy fingers, cooking with fresh herbs, my ability to cook... dang I'm good :)landing a back-flip on a wakeboard, the feeling that comes from laying your shoulder to the water on a slalom ski, not face-planting on a wakeboard, being held, the gift of agency, building a snowman, airplanes & sky miles, sunshine and blue skies, the ability to commune w/God, old family photos, creating order from chaos, avoiding even the appearance of evil, at an intersection when you and the car across from you are both making left turns, good gas mileage, taking a moment to reflect on the blessings in life, good music, Advil, the knowledge that we can be with those we love after this life, seashells, the opportunity to attain higher education, having my hair played with, driving stick, j-dawgs special sauce, the smell of homemade, freshly baked bread, synthetic oil, catching snowflakes on my tongue & eyelashes, great composers, clean movies, fresh peaches from the tree in the yard, experiencing other cultures & becoming better because of the people you meet there, dancing in the rain, The founding fathers, central air & central vac, The atonement of Jesus Christ and my knowledge of it, Mormon messages, A cheese grater, safety from harm & maltreatment of others, learning & growing from each guy I date, that I don't have to marry each guy I date, memories with those I love, BYU education week, teaching & learning, the sound of a cameras shutter & knowing you captured that perfect shot. Digital cameras so you can delete all the not perfect ones, hair elastics, a porch swing, an honest mechanic, quiet moments with those you love, a sunday afternoon nap, the sound & smell of a crackling fire, homemade bbq ribs w/made from scratch sauce, my grandmothers 3-layer chocolate cake, choosing to learn from painful experiences in my life & using them to help others, friends who don't tag ugly photos, duct tape, failed jumping pictures, the view of the Old City from the Mount of Olives, dew on the trees early in the morning on a backpacking trip, personal copies of the scriptures, adobe products, the ability to change & repent, road trips & milkshakes, Sabbath's spent in quiet contemplation at the Garden Tomb or in Gethsemane, clean sheets, the glow of Christmas lights on icicles, learning from the imperfect & allowing it to create a desire in me to strive for perfection, a friend who sees you with all your imperfections & loves you for who you are, swinging on a cool fall day, the way I feel after a good long run, setting a good goal & the joy found in accomplishing it, being a finisher, my opportunities to study in Western Europe & the Middle East, Temples that are being built all across the globe (personal prayers answered for the one in Italy & South Florida)holding a new puppy, snowshoeing & hot tubing afterward, using my talents & gifts to help people & build the kingdom of God, homemade grape juice from the grapes in my back yard, learning to can things, homemade quilts, external hard-drives, the sound of leaves falling to the ground in the fall, sweet smelling perfume (flowerbomb, hani mori, ed hardy, true religion) lunch with an old friend, falling in love & choosing everyday to stay there, a heartfelt gift, swimming with dolphins, sting rays, barracuda, sea turtles... being a finisher, the blessings of a physical body, the opportunity to serve in the temple, the smell of freshly baked homemade apple pie w/orchard apples...

Run Bike Swim

Training for a tri...started while I was in Maine & New Hampshire. It's been so much fun--but my favorite times were with Livie! This is taken upside down while we're running. Liv wanted to listen to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse song, It's a Small World & Baby Einstein the whole time... so those 3 songs on repeat for 90min or so... it was AWESOME :)She is the best ipod holder in the whole wide world!Biking through the Whites after the Hurricane was pretty amazing.
AND... an open water swim @ Range Pond was incredible!

Sand Turtles w/ Lil' Livie...

Since parents don't really have time to blog all the awesome adventures... that's what aunts are for, right :) I love you liv & can't wait for you to come visit... we'll make our turtle farm in the snow next time!

"How to Save a Life..."

From a well known song by The Fray... this lyric was on my mind for the rest of the day. This summer I went to Jackson Hole with a few guys. Ones dad, Ed, has a raft and took us white water rafting. With the ABNORMALLY high water year, Ed wasn't really looking forward to taking a bunch of amateurs down the most intense stretch of river. The ranger explained to us that rafts often get thrown with a water level of 19 or higher, and that 16 is good safe fun. He then explained that the water was at 23.6 and that we would literally be taking our lives into our own hands if we chose to hit lunch counter and other rapids. We decided against it--or more accurately decided to trust Ed's judgement and he didn't think it was a good idea. Saturday morning rolled around and nothing seemed to work for us to hit the mellow stretch, we couldn't get air any where, and literally it just seemed that if we were going to go it was going to be on lunch counter...

Later, after helping to save lives, we realized just why we were on the river that day. We were right in front of a raft that was thrown and were able to pull them into our raft. Luckily, there was a leak in our raft which meant we rode much lower in the water and our chances of being thrown were far less than the large commercial rafts.

After we picked the first two people up, I was given strength and peace from God to help calm them--AND as the men in my boat can attest--I was anything but calm previous to this on the river. We still didn't have verification that the others were ok, and as we prayed both silently and aloud to God for the welfare of the others... It was verification to me that God places us in one another's paths for a reason, and that as they later told us--we were their angels that day on the river.

A verse in the Book of Mormon explains that "God has provided a means that man, through faith, might work mighty miracles; therefore he becometh a great benefit to his fellow beings." -Mosiah 8:18 I hope to live each day in such a way that whether I be on a river, at work or at home, that I can qualify to be where God wants me to be and to be doing what He would have me do.

To the lifelong friends made that day on the river. Cheers!

‎"Blogging is not writing... it's graffiti with punctuation." -Contagion

I know there are many who consider blogging to be prose... and while I agree it is something... I also believe that, in general, the stream of consciousness-poorly filtered writ that now spans the globe shall oft be considered "graffiti with punctuation."

Something very similar to every soccer mom who now has a Costco DSLR & considers herself a "photographer."

Stockton's Baptism

One of the happiest days of my life, seeing my brother's little boy enter the waters of baptism. My brother Brad was able to baptize him, and we got to spend time with Sydney, Stockton, Samantha & Hadyn--such a great weekend. I love you guys--all the way to Heaven & am so proud of you Stockton for deciding to follow the example of Jesus & be baptized. I know your daddy Scott would be very proud of you!

Things Change in 5 years...

So many things change in 5 years...I have completed 2 degrees, started 2 businesses, put in thousands of hours of volunteer work, lived in 2 states, paid off a car, travelled to 17 countries and all over the states... but one thing hasn't changed... I miss my brother. I got the chance to see his 3 little kids last week when his little boy was baptized and I can't help but see him in their little smiling faces--they are the most beautiful, talented kids in the whole world! Sometimes I wonder if anyone else misses or remembers him...? I hope that from all these trials and lessons, I am a better person today than I was in 2006.

Where, Doesn't Really Matter...

A reunion with good friends from Jerusalem yesterday, dates with a few good men this week, a party with a good friend and meeting some other good friends and having the chance to reach out and be that good person in the lives of some friends who needed it this week, drinking juice boxes while swinging on the swings with a good friend, following the promptings of the Spirit to help restore in others the belief in good people... it is all good, life truly is good.

Really it has helped me to realize that whether I am in Jerusalem, Israel or Florence, Italy or Boca Raton, Florida or even Bountiful, Utah--there are good people all around me of every faith and ethnicity and we each bring a great variance of life experience to the table and if we follow the promptings of the Spirit and reach out to others consistently that it really doesn't matter where we live but how we live.

Monday I had the experience to follow the Spirit--the promptings of the Holy Ghost-- the still small voice inside that whispers or prompts or induces feelings or thoughts that when acted upon help me to accomplish good for the Lord and bless the lives of others [to read more on the Holy Ghost please see: http://lds.org/study/topics/holy-ghost?lang=eng] Monday I had the opportunity to reach out to someone that I didn't even know needed it--but God was aware of this person--and through the Holy Ghost helped me to be there and help save a life.

It really doesn't matter where I live or how old I am, or what my marital or educational status is, so long as I know that the course of life I am pursuing is in accordance with the Will of my Father in Heaven and that I have qualified for the companionship of the Holy Ghost and am helping to accomplish the work that my Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ would have me do... then life truly is beautiful!

Change Has Been, Change Will Be...

"Reunion"

Change will come
Change is here
Love fades out
Then love appears

Now my water's turned to wine
And these thoughts I have
I now claim as mine
I'm coming home

Change has been
Change will be
Time will tell
Then time will ease

Now my curtain has been drawn
And my heart can go
Where my heart does belong

I'm going home.

That's right, the words of Collective Soul say it best this time around... it is time to return to those I love on the other side of the world and to move forward with the next phase in my life. The last 4 months of my life seem to have flown by, and... well... I am not surprised with the pace or travel, study and service that we have kept. I am excited to go through the last week of Christ's life and to be tested on the last 3 finals of my college career--material that has increased my knowledge and testimony and that has helped me to become.

I remember coming home from full-time service as a missionary with a plethora of emotions and unsure which I "should" feel... I am now done with the shoulds and onto the rejoicing in whatever phase of life I am in. It has been a wonderful opportunity to be here in the Holy Land and to learn more of the life and ministry of my Savior Jesus Christ, but the Lord doesn't bring you some place this wonderful and expect you to settle for medicority--where muich is given much is required and I can't wait to return and apply what I have learned to the building up of the kingdom of God on the Earth!

May we all rejoice in the first Presidency Message from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that He is Risen, Christ the Lord is Risen. Because Jesus Christ lived, died, and rose again--so too may we. The message of hope and love and rejoicing found in the gospel of Jesus Christ is one that we can share during this Easter season whether we live in Israel and walk the streets where Christ carried the cross, or dwell somewhere across the world where we personally must take up our crosses and follow the Savior.I know He lives. I did not need to walk these streets or see these places to have my faith confirmed. I know no more surely today than I did six months ago that Jesus Christ lives and that He loves each one of us. I have a better understanding of the land where he lived and the teachings that He shared, but those are available to each who truly seeks--He is found in the scriptures and through sincere prayer. I love the Lord Jesus Christ and am excited for this adventure today and each one to come!

Yad Vashem...

Really no words can adequately express the multitude of emotions that wash over you when seeing the atrocities of the Holocaust. The childrens museum hit me with particular significance because of the great love that I have for my nieces and nephew and the children here in Jerusalem... the candles are in the museum in honor of the 1.5 million children that suffered and died in the Holocaust. How grateful I am for the atonement of Jesus Christ that in and through Him, all things can be made right, if not in this life than in the next. I hope and pray that we can all help prevent such world suffering.

The Battle of a Lifetime...

Although it was good... I'm not referring to the Packers & the Steelers I am definitely talking about the showdown between David & Goliath and the re-make we had here in that same valley yesterday... It drew my mind to the words of the late President Gordon B. Hinckley, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who said speaking of this battle:

"David spoke these great words: “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
“This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (see 1 Sam. 17:42–46).
That was brave talk for a boy who stood against a nine-foot giant.
In anger Goliath came at him. Then David, running toward the giant, “put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth” (1 Sam. 17:49).

We all have "evil giants in our lives"
I would like to apply this story to our lives. There are Goliaths all around us, hulking giants with evil intent to destroy. These are not nine-foot-tall men, but they are people and institutions that control attractive but evil things that may challenge and weaken and destroy us. Included in these are beer and other liquors and tobacco. Those who market these products would like to enslave you into their use. There are illegal drugs of various kinds which, I am told, are relatively easy to obtain. For those who peddle them this is a multibillion-dollar industry, a giant web of evil.

There is pornography, seductive and interesting and inviting. It has become a giant industry, producing magazines, films, and other materials. It is available on the Internet and, if you allow, it will intrude into your home via your television. It is designed to take your money and lead you toward activities that utterly destroy.

It is almost impossible to entirely avoid exposure to their products. You see these materials on all sides. But you need not fear if you have the slingshot of truth in your hands. You have been counseled and taught and advised. You have the stones of virtue and honor and integrity to use against these enemies who would like to conquer you. When they challenge you, you can hit them “between the eyes,” to use a figurative expression. You can triumph over them by disciplining yourself to avoid them. You can say to the whole lot of them as David said to Goliath, “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.”
Victory will be yours. There is not a person in this Church who needs to succumb to any of these forces. You are a child of God. You have His power within you to sustain you. You have the right to call upon God to protect you. Do not let Goliath frighten you. Stand your ground and hold your place, and you will be triumphant. As the years pass, you will look back with satisfaction upon the battles you have won in your individual lives.

When temptation comes your way, name that boastful, deceitful giant “Goliath!” and do with it as David did to the Philistine of Gath. I humbly pray that God will bless each of you."

I am so grateful for the perspective the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ yields in my life. I am grateful to be here learning on site, the experiences of the people in the scriptures and cultivating an even greater desire to do good and to face the Goliaths in my life. I know that these are true and correct principles and that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ it is possible to do as Paul says in Philippians 4:13 to do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

ps pics to come...

Photos from Egypt...

I have more from the unrest, hiking Sinai... roughly 6,000 photos from our little adventure to Egypt but for now here are a few from the program.

Riots in Egypt

Just to let everyone know I have enjoyed a safe and uneventful exodus from Egypt. The hand of the Lord was upon us each step of the way and I am more thankful than ever to live in a country with the religious and political freedoms I enjoy.

We were never in harms way and can thank the directors of the Jerusalem Center and the Leaders of the LDS church for faith and prayers and for wise planning and great execution. I would also like thank my family and loved ones for your faith and prayers and know that I have truly been blessed. I have truly seen fulfilment of the promise that the Lord will go before my face and be on my right hand and on my left and am so thankful for the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and the many blessings it affords.

We had great tour guides and armed guards with us 24x7 and never once felt that I was in danger. The night before we left Cairo one of our guides went to help protect the National Museum and was shot with a rubber bullet and he was even at work the next morning.

I hope you will join with me in praying for the nations of the World that are in a state of turmoil that the Lord may be with them and that His will may be done. There were so many good people there and such great peverty (40 million beneath the poverty line with one meal/2$--or less--per day). I hope to see a president elected that will change things for the better and a system of checks and balances be established to protect the rights and interests of the people. I also realize that I know relatively little about so many of the issues abroad and my graditude for my rights and privliges is compounded greatly by this.

Thank you again for your faith and prayers in our behalf.

Love,Ash
